Introduction: The Price You Don’t See

When you click “buy now” on that five dollar dress from Shein, when you walk out of Zara with discounted clothes, when you browse Temu for cheap products, you are participating in genocide. You are funding slavery. You are making possible the destruction of the Uyghur Muslims of East Turkestan, a land the Chinese Communist Party calls Xinjiang.

This is not an exaggeration. The clothes you wear are soaked in Uyghur blood, stitched by Uyghur hands in concentration camps, produced through a system of oppression so brutal that experts worldwide call it genocide.

East Turkestan: A Nation Being Erased

East Turkestan is the homeland of the Uyghur people, a Turkic Muslim nation that has existed for over a thousand years. They are not Chinese. They are a colonized people living under brutal colonial occupation that seeks to erase them completely from existence.

China invaded in 1949 and has ruled it as occupied territory ever since. But since 2017, China has escalated from cultural suppression to outright genocide. The world is witnessing the systematic destruction of the Uyghur people while hunting for bargains on apps designed to make them complicit in that destruction.

The Concentration Camps: Over One Million Imprisoned

Over one million Uyghurs have been detained in concentration camps. In a population of twelve million, this means nearly every Uyghur family has had someone taken. Fathers disappear on their way to work. Mothers are dragged from homes in the night. Children come back from school to find their parents gone.

You can be detained for praying. For fasting during Ramadan. For having a beard. For wearing a headscarf. For owning religious books. For speaking Uyghur instead of Chinese. China has criminalized the Uyghur identity itself.

Inside the Camps: Systematic Torture and Destruction

What happens inside is worse than death. Detainees are shackled, beaten, and thrown into overcrowded cells where forty people cram into spaces for ten. They are denied sleep, lights on for twenty four hours. They are starved, given barely enough to survive.

The torture is designed to destroy body and mind. Electric shocks to genitals. Waterboarding. Daily beatings. Hanging by wrists for days. Forced to kneel on broken glass. Fingernails pulled out. Teeth broken. Bones fractured deliberately.

Women are systematically raped by guards and Han Chinese men brought in specifically for this purpose. Gang rape is common. Women are forced to strip naked, subjected to humiliating searches multiple times daily. Many are forcibly sterilized or have IUDs inserted against their will. Birth rates in Uyghur regions have collapsed by over sixty percent in three years.

Men report electric shocks to genitals, forced nudity, and rape with objects. Parents are tortured in front of children. Children tortured in front of parents. The aim is to break all bonds of family and identity.

Detainees are forced to memorize Chinese communist propaganda for hours daily. They must sing songs praising Xi Jinping. They must denounce their religion, their culture, their own families. They are forced to eat pork and drink alcohol. Those who refuse are beaten savagely.

The Stolen Children

While parents are in camps, children are taken to state orphanages designed to sever them from their Uyghur and Islamic identity. A child’s father is arrested for praying. The mother was taken for wearing a headscarf. The child, sometimes two or three years old, is placed in an institution where they are forbidden to speak Uyghur, forbidden to practice their culture.

These children are given Chinese names. They are taught their parents were criminals. They are taught Islam is a disease. They grow up not knowing their own language, their own history, who they really are. Hundreds of thousands of Uyghur children are in these facilities. An entire generation raised to not know they are Uyghur.

Imagine being five years old. Men take your parents in the night. You scream but no one helps. Years pass. You forget your mother’s face. You forget your language. You forget your name. You become Chinese. This is happening to hundreds of thousands right now.

Forced Labor: Your Clothes, Their Slavery

China is not just imprisoning and torturing Uyghurs. China is using them as forced labor to produce goods for the global market. The genocide is profitable. Your shopping is subsidized by slave labor.

After months of torture in camps, detainees who have been broken are released not to freedom but to “jobs” in factories that are extensions of the camp system. They are transported under guard to textile factories. They live in dormitories surrounded by barbed wire. They cannot leave. They cannot refuse. They are paid nothing. They work twelve to eighteen hour shifts. This is slavery.

China has also implemented “labor transfer” programs where Uyghurs are forcibly relocated from East Turkestan to factories across China. Officially called poverty alleviation, it is forced displacement and forced labor. They are transported thousands of miles away, housed in secured facilities, not allowed to leave, forced to work in conditions meeting every definition of slavery.

Xinjiang produces over eighty percent of China’s cotton. This cotton is picked by forced labor, processed by forced labor, woven by forced labor, sewn by forced labor. Then shipped worldwide and sold to consumers who have no idea they are wearing products of genocide.

Shein, Temu, and Zara: Profiting from Genocide

These companies offer clothes at impossible prices. A dress for five dollars. How? Slave labor.

Shein is a Chinese fast fashion company, one of the most downloaded shopping apps worldwide. It releases thousands of new designs daily. Multiple investigations found Shein’s supply chain directly connected to forced labor in Xinjiang. Shein sources massive cotton and fabric from the region. Shein uses factories employing “transferred” Uyghur workers. When confronted, Shein denies, obfuscates, and refuses independent audits. They are profiting from genocide.

Temu operates the same model. Impossibly low prices. Complete opacity about where products come from. Direct connections to facilities using forced labor.

Zara, owned by Spanish company Inditex, manufactures massive amounts in China and has been repeatedly connected to factories using Uyghur forced labor. Despite promises to clean up supply chains, Zara continues sourcing from regions where forced labor is documented. Why? Because slave labor is profitable.

These companies depend on you not asking questions. They depend on you seeing a five dollar dress and thinking “great deal” instead of “who made this and under what conditions.” They depend on your willingness to ignore that no one can make a dress, ship it worldwide, and sell it for five dollars unless someone is being horrifically exploited.

Because you wanted to save two euros on a shirt, a Uyghur child was separated from their family forever.

Because you bought that five dollar dress, a Uyghur woman was raped in a concentration camp.

Because you clicked “buy now” on that bargain, a Uyghur man was tortured until he denounced his religion.

Because you wanted trendy clothes without paying much, an entire population is being erased, their language destroyed, their culture forbidden, their children stolen, their bodies enslaved.

This is direct economic support. The money you pay goes to companies sourcing from facilities using slave labor. That money funds more camps, more surveillance, more oppression. Your shopping fuels the genocide machine.

Right now, a Uyghur woman in a factory, forced to work eighteen hours sewing clothes Shein will sell, was taken from her home, her children stolen and placed in state orphanages, tortured until her spirit broke. She sews the dress you will wear once and throw away.

Right now, a Uyghur man in a cotton field, forced to pick cotton under armed guards, is not paid, cannot leave. The cotton he picks becomes your bargain shirt. He had a family, a business, and a future. All taken because he was Uyghur and Muslim.

Right now, a Uyghur child in a state orphanage does not remember their parents’ faces. Their mother is in a camp being tortured. Their father died in a camp. This child is being taught to forget their language, to hate their culture. This child’s stolen future is the cost of your cheap fashion.

The Betrayal of Muslim Governments

Where are the Muslim rulers? Where is Saudi Arabia, which claims to lead the Islamic world? Where is Turkey with ethnic ties to Uyghurs? Where is Pakistan, calling China its closest ally?

They are silent. Worse, they are complicit.

Saudi Arabia has said nothing about the genocide. When China was criticized at the UN, Saudi Arabia sided with China. Saudi Arabia has deported Uyghurs back to China knowing they would be sent to camps. Saudi Arabia values its economic relationship with China more than millions of Muslims being tortured for their faith.

Turkey, despite Erdogan’s occasional rhetoric, has done nothing of substance. No sanctions. No import restrictions. Turkey has even arrested Uyghur activists on Chinese pressure and deported some back to China.

Pakistan is perhaps most shameful. Pakistan shares a border with East Turkestan. Thousands of Uyghurs fled to Pakistan seeking safety. Pakistan arrested them, imprisoned them, deported some back to China where they face certain torture. When asked about the genocide, Pakistan’s Prime Minister said he was not aware. This is a lie. They all know. They simply do not care because China gives them money.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has said virtually nothing. In 2019, while over a million Uyghurs were in camps, the OIC issued a statement commending China for “providing care to its Muslim citizens.” This is active collaboration in genocide.

Why do Muslim governments betray the Uyghurs? China is economically powerful. China offers loans and investments these governments depend on. China threatens economic retaliation. These governments value money more than Muslim lives, more than their claimed principles, more than Islam itself.

The rulers are not just silent. They are helping China. Providing diplomatic cover. Blocking Uyghur refugees. Arresting Uyghur activists. Cooperating with Chinese intelligence. They have chosen the side of the oppressor.

The Only Solution: The Khilafah

The Uyghur genocide continues because there is no Islamic authority with power and will to stop it. The nation-state system has divided Muslims into over fifty countries, each pursuing its own interests, each vulnerable to economic pressure, each ruled by governments serving themselves rather than Islam.

If the Khilafah existed, if Muslims were united under a single Islamic state accountable to Shariah, the genocide would not be possible. The Khilafah would have economic power to impose real costs on China. It would have military power to threaten intervention. It would have moral authority to rally Muslims worldwide. Most importantly, it would have the obligation under Islamic law to defend Muslims persecuted for their faith.

Under the Khilafah, Uyghurs would not be citizens of a weak nation-state China can ignore. They would be part of the Ummah, and their defense would be an obligation of the entire Islamic state. The Khilafah would not calculate whether defending Uyghurs is economically beneficial because defending Muslims is a religious obligation transcending economics.

Current rulers cannot and will not save the Uyghurs because the system makes saving them contrary to their interests. Saudi Arabia needs Chinese investment. Pakistan needs Chinese loans. Turkey needs Chinese markets. Every Muslim country is trapped in economic dependence making them powerless or unwilling to challenge China.

The work of restoring the Khilafah is the only solution. Until Muslims are united under single authority putting Islamic obligations above national interests, genocides like this will continue.

What You Must Do Now

Stop buying from companies profiting from Uyghur forced labor. Delete Shein. Delete Temu. Stop shopping at Zara. Yes, you will pay more for clothes. That is the point. Your convenience is not worth a Uyghur life.

Spread awareness. Most people do not know about the genocide or the connection to products they buy. Tell them. Share information. Make it impossible to claim ignorance.

Support organizations helping Uyghurs. Find groups providing aid to refugees, documenting the genocide, supporting survivors.

Pressure your government. Demand they ban imports of products made with forced labor. Demand they sanction Chinese officials. Demand they provide asylum to Uyghur refugees.

Make dua for the Uyghurs. They are your brothers and sisters in faith being tortured for that faith. Their suffering should matter to you.

The Uyghur genocide is a test for the entire Ummah. A test of whether we truly believe in Muslim brotherhood. A test of whether we will sacrifice our comfort for justice. A test of whether we stand with the oppressed or remain complicit.

Right now, most of the Ummah are failing this test. We shop at companies profiting from genocide. We choose to remain ignorant because knowledge requires action. We make excuses for rulers who betray Uyghurs for Chinese money.

This must change. The blood of the Uyghurs cries out for justice. Choose which side you want to be on. Choose whether your clothes are worth the price being paid. Choose whether you will be among those who stood for justice or those who enabled genocide.

The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
